Workaround(s)
Please give IE a real download manager. THe download engine of IE 8 has been around since IE 5.5... Might be time to update it !

I want a download manager that lists simultaneous downloads in the same window and that give me the ability to pause/resume downloads.

Even better, the ability to schedule downloads or to limit bandwidth usage.

Review Status. Please select No.
The IE Team will update this status to Yes once we have reviewed this report.
Yes

1. Please verify that you are using Internet Explorer 8.
Yes, I am using Internet Explorer 8.

2. What is the goal you’re trying to accomplish?  You can put this in an “I want to…” statement or a statement about the end result (e.g., “Fill out online forms with no spelling errors”). If necessary, please include any URL’s.
Manage simultaneous downloads in the same place with ability to pause/resume DL.

3. Can you accomplish your goal in another way? If so, please describe the steps otherwise put “Cannot accomplish with IE8”.
Cannot accomplish with IE 8. Could use a separate DL manager though.

4. What part of internet explorer are you working with when trying to accomplish your goal?
---Networking and Download

5. What do you consider the priority of implementing this scenario?
0 = This scenario is high priority.

6. Why did you give this scenario the priority you did?
IE lacks a real download manager... like firefox has... !

A Download Manager would be great! But also, why not to refine the whole thing with providing a Gadget to control the current downloads.
The Download Manager should also support FTP downloads.

Just a note here.... I really dislike the current implementation of most download managers. They're always in the way - I actually prefer the way Internet Explorer currently works.

Maybe there's some sort of middle ground though. Whatever happens, at very least I don't want to have to "clean up" some nasty list of ancient downloaded files, but if it tracked current downloads and "cancelled" downloads it might be okay.

Agree with ShadowChaser here, I prefer the current IE way too, although it would be nice to have the ability to pause/resume downloads, eventually to control the bandwidth. For me, feel free to do crazy things to the underlaying download engine, but keep the current download windows.

Yes this is a serious issue and is the only reason why I still use Firefox

The built in download manager is pretty much the only reason I still use Firefox too. Being able to see the download link, pause, retry, etc is invaulable and much needed in any "current" browser. Its easy enough to turn the option off if you don't need it, but everything now days is a download and having download manager is a requirement to me. Please add this.
