Last night I was giving a presentation on new features in Katmai and due to the projector had to run in 800x600. I was quite embarrassed when I got to the "create policy" dialog in Policy Management, which does not fit in 800x600, and does not provide scrollbars! See the attachment or the following URL, which shows how the Create Policy dialog looks on 800x600 resolution with large fonts:

This is 800x600 (with hidden taskbar). Notice how I cannot see the buttons? I might be able to TAB to them and get lucky, but this is a horrible user experience. I can't imagine how bad it would be in 640x480.

640x480 may be a stretch now, but if it is a "supported" resolution, the tools should be completely usable, period. I can imagine many scenarios (e.g. RDP, in-rack monitors, and board-integrated video cards) where DBAs will not have the luxury of 1024x768 or larger, and if dialogs like this are broken, it /will/ become a blocking issue and you will hear very loud voices. :-)

Proposed Solution

All dialogs do not have to look good at lower resolutions, but they should function. Feel free to optimize layout and appearance for 1024x768 or above, but please test all functionality in lower resolutions before releasing dialogs.

I understand that the current "new look" dialogs are not necessarily what we will see at RTM, but this is just one example, and I am hoping to prod better attention to these details for ALL dialogs and user interface components.

Aaron - I have bugs on the resolution, format and high-res issues in Katmai. We're doing a skin re-fit now, so I'll make sure I pass these along to the developer.

It's not just the overall screen resolution, either. Problems like this also arise on hi-res displays that have been configured for visual accessibility (for example, when large fonts are chosen in Windows globally). Please make sure dialogs work in these cases, too.

Without question, dialogs must have scrollbars if not all the controls fit!
