I have a fresh install of Vista. Tried to install SQL Server July CTP x86. After installing everything tried to connect through SQL Server Management Studio and I get the following error.
A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 233)
Have setup windows authentication.

Steps to Reproduce
Install Katamai on a freshly installed Vista Ultimate box and try connecting through SQL Server Management studio.
Should connect fine.

I'm seeing the same issue but on a fresh 2008 RC0 install. The event viewer is showing:
The Tabular Data Stream (TDS) version 0x730a0003 of the client library used to open the connection is unsupported or unknown. The connection has been closed. [CLIENT: <local machine>]
This is a connect with the bundled SMS, not Orcas.

We have not heard back from you, but with the data provided we are confident this is a known issue and has to do with versions of the runtime namely System.Data.SqlClient namespace successfully connecting to different SQL Server 2008 pre-release CTPs.
Orcas (Visual Studio) Beta 2 works with SQL Server 2008 July CTP

Are you able to collect the ERRORLOG when the error happens? I want to confirm whether it is expected or not.

We have seen this issue before. Mostlikely, it is because the newer version of .NET(orcas), has a protocol version higher than latest SQL Server 2008 CTP. Could you send us the SQL Server Errorlog to confirm so.
This issue will be resolved in next Katmai CTP. At meantime, Orcas can only connect to shipped SQL Server, such as SQL Server 2005.
