When upgrading to 2008r2 (RTM), i was told that i had "2005 express tools " installed.
This was incorrect and a third party add-in (redgate sql search) was giving a false positive.


Uninstalling the addin allow the upgrade to complete ok.

Encountered same issue, but RedGate updated SQL Search to version 1.0.0.315 and then SQL 2008 R2 installed without a problem.

Whilst i do agree that It is not a microsoft problem, It is obviously stopping SQL Server from upgrading. Would it not even warrant a note in the release notes ?

You need to contact redgate to have this fixed. We do not have any control over this external issue.

Update SQL Search to version 1.0.0.315 or higher
