Taking a database offline on a SQL Server 2008 or 2008 R2 instance will break intellisense for all databases on the instance when using SSMS 2008 R2 once the local cache is refreshed (either explicitly or through a new connection).

This only has an affect when taking a database offline that was online when the instance was last restarted. After a restart with the database offline, intellisense works again as expected.

This does not affect intellisense when using SSMS 2008.

1) Use Intellisense in SSMS 2008 R2.
2) Take a database offline that was online during the last instance restart.
3) Refresh Intellisense's local cache or reconnect to the instance, and try to use Intellisense.

Intellisense stops working for the server instance until the database is brought back online, or the instance is restarted.

Intellisense continues to work without requiring a restart of the instance.

Thanks for your input. This issue will be fixed in the next major release of SQL Server.

I can also reproduce this. With SQL Server 2008 and SSMS 2008R2.

I'm able to reproduce this on SQL Server 2008R2 with CU 3, and also on SQL Server 2008 with SP1 CU 8.
