I had the same issue on Windows 2008 R2 with SQL Reporting Service R2. I was just adding the Reporting Services but the SUS update failed even after adding .Net Framework 4. I even rebooted for good measure. Then I downloaded SP2 and ran it. Then I got an error. It seems SP2 is for SQL 2008 not 2008 R2. Unfortunately SUS doesn't seem to know this so it's advertising the update.

Thank you for reporting the issue. We are considering a fix for the next Service Pack of SQL Server 2008. For now installing .Net Framework 4 Full from www.microsoft.com/net should should solve the issue.

Thank you,
Microsoft SQL Server

I have encountered similar problem on my Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit laptop. Microsoft SQL Server SP2 (KB2285068) failed to install. However, on my other Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit machine, the installation succeed. I started to think that Microsoft 32 bit systems are more reliable than the 64bit. I've reached that conclusion when I tried to apply VS 2010 SP1 beta when installation failed on the 64bit version and went so smoth on the 32bit version!

I have the same problem with my automatic update.

Here in my company, we have automatic server update. When I connect the lan, I received the message of the MS SQL server update (KB2285068).

After run it, the error message "Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643" on mty sqlsetup.log and re-start the process.

I have the Windows XP SP3 and the version of the sqlservr.exe is 2007.100.1600.22.

I download the file "SQLServer2008SP1-KB968369-x86-ENU.exe" (262MB) file and after run it, I received the error message "Version is incompatible. Installed version is 10.0.1075.23 and expected version is 10.0.1600.22.

I download the file "SQLServer2008SP2-KB2285068-x86-ENU.exe" (264MB) file and after run it, I received the error message "Version is incompatible. Installed version is 10.0.1075.23 and expected version is 10.0.1600.22.

Thanks

Ari

.NET framework 4 install from www.microsoft.com/net resolves the issue for me. When you d/l the full SP2 installer and run it, it actually spits out the error and how to correct it.
