Description

I am trying to view the contents of a back up in SQL Server Management Studio and am getting a meaningless error message. This should be changed to say something that might actually help me resolve what the issue is.

This particular message isn't coming from SQL, but is a Windows message indicating that there was a problem looking up the text of the proper error message. It is possible that there was a problem with your installation which is preventing this message from being located. We are unable to reproduce the situation here. To be sure, this is not a planned or intended message from SQL Server.

I agree with you, when it comes to OS error, SQL Server doesn't have a nice record of message meaningfullness.

It happened to me when I was trying to restore SQL 2000 Northwind database from SQL Server 2008 R2 x64 on W7x64. The database location was default: C:\SQL Server 2000 Sample Databases. There was a problem SQL Management Studio accessing the folder. So you need to run SQL Management Studio "As Administrator." The solution was found here:
