Description

SSMS - Experiences random hanging. I've experienced random hanging, plus slow response when using SSMS for SQL 2012. The hangs are very random and I've never been able to reproduce them. However in all cases, during the hang, SSMS displays a balloon help stating that Management Studio is busy and to try the step again later. The slow response is mostly in Object Explorer. For example, I'm seeing 20 to 30 secs when trying to open the list of databases. In comparison, SSMS for SQL 2008 opens a similar instances in under 3 seconds.

In general it appears that SSMS has not received enough attention in this release.

Thanks for reporting this issue.

Could you please capture full process dump and share with us?. this could help us investigate this specific issue

You could follow the link below to automatically capture full process dump whenever a process crashes

I have the same Problem (Message "SSMS is busy" forever). It is often when i do the following:

- Work with the SSMS
- Start the Internet Explore (SSMS is in Background) and work on our Websites
- switch to the SSMS

Hi Kmoskal
Thanks for writing in with this issue. We have continued to investigate, but can no longer reproduce the issue. Please reopen this bug if you encounter some specific repro steps.

Thanks,
-Sam

Further news: The problem I've been experiencing did not ultimately resolve with closing ObjectExplorer, but only after turning off AutoRecovery at the Environment Tab of SSMS 2012. I've been able to open ObjectExplorer and use IntelliSense without difficulty, since then.

Same problem: Using SSMS 2012 with Object Explorer open to a single SQL 2008 R2 server, and while writing some complex T-SQL code in the Query Window, the memory utilization ujnder Task Manager of the Ssms.exe*32 executable climbs incessantly, often exceeding 1 GB. Closing Object Explorer causes the memory to be released. Definitely a bug.

Hi,

I am also experiencing this issue and it is very frustrating as your query tabs do not recover after the crash thus if in the middle of creating a proc etc you have lost the work..... :(

Running a i7 with 8GB of RAM....

Hi KMoskal and TechMgr1,
Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft.
We have investigated the issue and identified a couple of places where SSMS was performing quite slow and would appear hung. These two issues have been fixed and will be available in the next public release of SQL Server 2012.
If you still experience slowness / hang issues when the fix becomes available, please get back to us with more info on the machine configuration, scenarios etc so we can dig further.

We appreciate your valuable feedback.
Thanks,
Prachi

I would add that this is happening on a beefy laptop Quad core i5 with 8 GB of RAM. Never had this issue with CTP3. This is definitely something that has been introduced in RC0

I have the exact same issues. When using the query editor and typing a query SSMS hangs preventing any type operation and returns to normal after a few seconds as long as about 10 seconds. It cannot be deemed as random since it is very pervasive. The only thing random about the hang is the wait time which ranges from 1 to 2 seconds to almost 10 seconds. It almost seems like SSMS is trying to do an active keytype prediction or validation that is causing this hanging behaviour. very frustrating and hardly usable SSMS.
