Workaround(s)
when I setup my SQL server, I was very new to SQL in Azure (as i'm sure is the case for most people when setting up their first and most likely only SQL server). At that time I made a poor choice for the username based on steps in a walk-through.

I tried to rename with the standard ALTER LOGIN command, but the permissions are not set to allow this.

Ultimately, because I did not have any important data on the server yet, I ended up deleting the server and creating a new one.
