Description

Restarting SQL Server Agent gives this message. I can't find any service in services called messenger service. [364] The Messenger service has not been started - NetSend notifications will not be sent

Hello,
Messenger service is removed from Windows Windows Vista onwards. SQL Agent was checking if Messenger service was started and reports error message in SQLAgent Log. Agent continues functioning without any issues.

Net Send is announced for deprecation from SQL 2008 onwards - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc879341(v=sql.100).aspx. Please consider using other notification mechanism like DatabaseMail

We shall work on removing this error message in future version of SQL Server
