2 Issues

Issue 1
Error when running ASP.NET development server (server failed to start listening on port error)

Issue 2
Unable to build and debug using IIS. This isn't really an issue, it is more of what to do to run under IIS.

Issue 1
Unchecked the Integrated Windows authentication and use anonymous access only, then restart IIS. This then allowed me to build and run my web project using the ASP.NET development server. I was then able to turn Integrated Windows back on and everything worked fine.

Issue2
In the Property Pages of the web project there is a Menu called Start Options. In the Server section select Use custom server radio option and in the Base URL textbox type in your path eg. http://localhost/web/page.aspx. Build and run your web project and you will be running under IIS (as long as your virtual directory is set up correctly).

I've see this error occurring randomly, but once it occurs, it keeps re-occurring until you shut down your computer and restart (a warm restart does not help).

Using netstat -a does not show the port being in use, actually. Trying to start some other service on that port shows that the port is not occupied....

To circumvent this problem, start WebDev (ASP.NET Development Server) by hand, using the following commandline (you can find WebDev.WebServer.EXE in %SystemRoot%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727 or something similar).

WebDev.WebServer.EXE /port:12345 /path:"my path to precompiled web" /vpath:"optional virtual path"

run the command without arguments to get a popup with some explanation on the arguments you can use.
Next, in your Visual Studio 2005 (SP1 or not, both have the same problem), you go to Website > Start Options > "Start Options" and select "Use Custom Web Server".

I have faced this problem with Vista.
Click over your project and tab to properties windows. Set "Use dynamic ports" to "False" and change the "Port Number" to 8080 then try debugging. It solved my problem, hope it helps to you.

I think the port number is changed when you restarted your computer. While trying to solve this issue, I have read that VS get an empty port on start. In first case I have done the same and solved my problem but faced again. Better to solve as above not to face again ;)

I have found the workaround for this. Though it may not be a very professional one but really very easy and effective. What you need to do is just change the location of the Folder (in which all your files are there) to some thing else. Load in project in VS2005 and run the project again. and u have done it.

This works becoz the build in server chooses a new port number to run the site.
