Workaround(s)
The lists in the first three tabs (.NET, COM and Projects) of the Add Reference dialog can be (and actually are already) very long. It can take some time to find the right item.
Details (expand)

Version Currently Used

Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2

Operating System Currently Used

Windows 7

Suggestion

It would be useful to have a textbox where we could type a few letters to filter the lists. This would be similar to the filter textboxes found in several places in Windows 7.
The filter would be applied to the name.
Note: multi-selection must continue to be work.

Benefits

Faster Development
Improved User Interface

Yes, please!

I think that adding search capabilities to these tabs, needs to be the next improvement to this underrated dialog.
We've seen how search was added to the properties toolbox and it was good, so I think it's a no-brainer.

I came across this one, and seen several retweets for this feature. I like the idea… maybe for vNext?

Also can you make it load asynchronously so that VS doesn't flip out everytime I open the Reference dialog.

Thank you for your feedback. We have noted the great enthusiasm for this feature and while unfortunately, it is too late in the VS2010 release cycle to add this feature, we do plan on taking this request under consideration for Post-VS2010. Thank you!

Too bad.
We managed to get this for the Toolbox and Properties windows, but unfortunately not yet for the Add Reference window.
