Adding as new feedback item since I can't execute my VS 2005 IDE (devenv.exe) after installation failed. The installation Rollback did not rollback to a usable state.

Comment duplicated on 225101:

I had 2.2 gig free prior to installing, and mine failed w/ 8 minutes remaining on XP Pro (us english) w/ VS2005 Team Edition Software Developer.
The "Retry" option failed to have any effect during the install.

Once I received the "free some disk space and click Retry. Or click Cancel to exit..." message (I believe the file was something like MFC80???.AMD64.pdb), I found a 400+ meg .iso file that I could permanently delete (shift-del), then clicked "Retry". Immediately afterwards I got another message telling me the install failed and then the freakin' thing backed all of the way back out.

After it finished backing out of the install, I never received any sort of a confirmation message / failure notice that the install failed.

And... now I can't open my VS IDE. I get a "devenv.exe - Application Error" message stating "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0150004). Click on OK to terminate the application."

Steps to Reproduce
Install VS2005 SP1 on machine w/ at or under 2 gig free disk space.
Actual Results
"devenv.exe - Application Error" message stating "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0150004). Click on OK to terminate the application."
Expected Results
I did not expect the installation to require more than 2 gig free disk space, but did expect a warning telling me that I did not have enough disk space available for the install (if that be the case).

I expected the "Retry" option on the error dialog to actually retry installing the file it failed on.

In addition, I expected the rolling back of the installation to leave my dev environment in a usable state.

I expected some sort of confirmation message that the installation failed after the rollback was complete.

Just a follow-up note on this issue: I ultimately had to format my hard drive and re-install to get .Net 2.0 loaded and operable again. I received a variety of errors when attempting to fix my problem prior to formatting, most notable where nGen errors and fusion LoadLibraryShim errors ("while initializing fusion Setup could not load fusion with LoadLibraryShim(). Error; the handle is invalid").

You can see the forum post : http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=778710&SiteID=1 for a duplicated user experience.

VS 2005 SP1 does require a lot of disk space to install it (~4 GB), but has a persistent footprint of just under 2 GB. Looking at the log, the only actions I see against devenv.exe are some custom actions. All files were rolled back according to the log, and NGEN custom actions would explain the error you're seeing.

If you run into this problem again or for other people seeing this post after a search, first run "ngen update" from the command line (in %WINDIR%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50757) to fix the NGEN issues.

I have the same problems, first SP1 failed because the space was not enough, then I freed some and tried again, so I had errors like theese:

Product: Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite - ENU -- The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2908. The arguments are: {B3D1770E-434E-43B6-AA9A-CEAD9F6AA799}, ,

Product: Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite - ENU -- Error 1935.An error occurred during the installation of assembly 'CppCodeProvider,Version="8.0.0.0",FileVersion="8.0.50727.762",PublicKeyToken="b03f5f7f11d50a3a",Culture="neutral",ProcessorArchitecture="MSIL"'. Ngen update says:
Application popup: ngen.exe - Application Error : The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0150004). Click on OK to terminate the application.
and mny other apps say this also

I have the same problemt too... The SP1 update failed on my evaluation version proffessional edition VS2005 too saying that not enough space was free on my root drive. And after failing, there has been some leftover file eating a lot of space which I have been unable to locate... Also, a lot of programs have been failing, which I think, are the ones needing the .net framework to run...

I managed to fix the problem,
go to c:\WINDOWS\WinSxS
search for 8.0.50727.163 AND 8.0.50727.762, then delete all files/folders that have this numbers in their name
then free up space and try to reinstall the SP1

To install sp1 you need more than 4 gig of free hard disk space. I had the same problem once but I reinstalled it again by freeing up my hard disk space (by moving folders here and there). There should be an option whether we want to backup files or not. Unfortunately there's no option to do so. By default it will backup all the files and waste our hard disk space just like win xp sp2 did :(

The fix of xumix worked for me. Thank you, xumix! After deleting the files I started the SP with a bach script I found on
http://weblogs.asp.net/jgalloway/archive/2006/12/19/things-i-wish-i-d-known-before-i-installed-vs-2005-service-pack-1.aspx
I think it is worth the time to read the short article.

And besides, it leaves a copy of the patch in C:\windows\installer, with a random name,
one copy (466 MB) for each failure.
It makes reclaiming storage to use even harder, given that the folder is hidden
and most people do not know it is there.

And there is no %WINDIR%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50757.

My mileage (Visual C++ only): 2,4 GB needed to run the installer, 1 GB taken after the cleanup.
Given that my Visual Studio needs 1,3 GB, it is really pathetic.
It seems you have introduced so many bugs to the product
that the service pack has to replace it altogether.
