Description

Visual Studio 2008 installation fails with Error 1330 on an intermitten basis. Checking both the SHA1 of the ISO file with fciv.exe and the integrity of the .cab file with SignTool and by using Explor Properties\Digital Signiture\Details shows both are fine.

Please note I have listed Vista as the operating system since I had the first failure there. However, I had a similar failure on Windows XP SP3.

I installed VS2010 from file
en_visual_studio_2010_professional_x86_dvd_509727.iso
two times with success (on Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7)
and one time with failure (on Windows 7 after installing SQL Server 2008 R2).
All installations happened into a VirtualPC 2007 v.6.0.192.0.
My host OS is Vista 64 bit

THE error message is:
MSI (s) (28:E4) [02:26:53:547]: File 'd:\cab31.cab' has an invalid hash. It is possibly corrupted.

What I'd like to achive was to work as a developer in VS2010 on Windows7, but with a SQL Server 2008 R2 installed (because of the Profiler.exe that does NOT come with SQL Express)
Unfortunately this combination of software seems to NOT work together

1. first time with success I installed on Windows Server 2008
I installed Server 2008 from this file
en_windows_web_server_2008_sp2_with_x86_dvd_342340.iso
then installed SQL Server 2008 Web from this file
en_sql_server_2008_web_x86_x64_dvd_x14-86077.iso
plus applying SQL Server 2008 SP1
Now VS2010 installed succesfully from this file
en_visual_studio_2010_professional_x86_dvd_509727.iso
(as said above)

2. second time with success on Windows 7
I installed first Windows 7 from this file
SW_DVD5_Win_Pro_7_32_X15-65804.ISO
then installed Office2010 from this file
Office_Professional_Plus_2010_W32_English_X16-32250.exe
then I installed the free MS Antivirus from file
mssefullinstall-x86fre-en-us-vista-win7.exe
and afterwards VS2010 from this file (as above)
en_visual_studio_2010_professional_x86_dvd_509727.iso
Ended with success

The following installation FAILED:
I installed first Windows 7 from this file
SW_DVD5_Win_Pro_7_32_X15-65804.ISO
then installed Office2010 from this file
Office_Professional_Plus_2010_W32_English_X16-32250.exe
now I installed MS Antivirus from this file
mssefullinstall-x86fre-en-us-vista-win7.exe
And turned its in memory scanning off
NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW
New was that I installed now SQL Server R2 from this file
SQL_Svr_DC_Std_Wkgp_Ent_DevSB_2008_R2_English_X16-52869.iso

Always all installed with standard settings, always ALL selected to be installed.
Always rebooted and at the end ALL updates installed using Widows Update.

Now comes the failure:
Installed the same package VS2010 from above

I've tried thousands of possibilities with no luck: copy, mounting, burning, cert dll re-registering. One file is damaged for my Win XP SP3. With Win 7 it works fine. The same installation.

I had this problem on Vista and now I'm having it on Windows 7. I never had the problem on XP.

I received:

We've not heard back from you.
If this continues to be an issue, please reactivate this issue, if you find that it still is affecting you.

This bug has been reported in a number of posting in the MS news groups. I could not find a record of it so I formally reported it. The issue does not still affect me as I managed to get around it and complete the installation. However, it is still a potential problem for anyone that installs Video Studio 2008.

I also noticed that your system says there are two comments but the bottom of the page says 0 comments.

Thanks for reporting the issue.
In order to fix the issue, we must first reproduce the issue in our labs. We are unable to reproduce the issue with the steps you provided. We tried to repro with the following steps:
1. Create a fresh Windows Vista SP1
2. Try to install Visual Studio 2008

The error is seeing happens when MSI encounters an error when reading the cab file from the installation source media.

It may help if you provide us with:
1. Copy files from DVD or network share to your hard disk and try to install again.
2. if this error happened, please provide us with log files as specified in the following post:
http://blogs.msdn.com/heaths/archive/2008/05/09/visual-studio-and-net-log-collection-utility.aspx

If we do not receive a response from you after 7-days , we will automatically close your issue. There is no obligation to respond -- at any time you may edit your issue via Connect and change the status to “Active.”

It seems that you should not install SQL Server 2008 R2 prior to VS2010 on Windows 7

I achieved to install VS2010 in two scenarios:

I installed VS2010 from file
en_visual_studio_2010_professional_x86_dvd_509727.iso
two times with success (on Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7)
and one time with failure (on Windows 7 after installing SQL Server 2008 R2).
All installations happened into a VirtualPC 2007 v.6.0.192.0.
My host OS is Vista 64 bit

1. first time with success I installed on Windows Server 2008
I installed Server 2008 from this file
en_windows_web_server_2008_sp2_with_x86_dvd_342340.iso
then installed SQL Server 2008 Web from this file
en_sql_server_2008_web_x86_x64_dvd_x14-86077.iso
plus applying SQL Server 2008 SP1
Now VS2010 installed succesfully from this file
en_visual_studio_2010_professional_x86_dvd_509727.iso

2. second time with success on Windows 7
I installed first Windows 7 from this file
SW_DVD5_Win_Pro_7_32_X15-65804.ISO
then installed Office2010 from this file
Office_Professional_Plus_2010_W32_English_X16-32250.exe
then I installed the free MS Antivirus from file
mssefullinstall-x86fre-en-us-vista-win7.exe
and afterwards VS2010 from this file (as above)
en_visual_studio_2010_professional_x86_dvd_509727.iso
Ended with success
