Description

Hi,

This might be a Windows Vista or a VisualStudio 2008 bug (or some settings on my Vista). I have unsuccessfully tried to install VS2008 on my Vista(32 bit) operating system. I keep getting the following error on my log:

The media I am using is a en_visual_studio_2008_professional_x86_x64wow_dvd_X14-26326.iso file. I have successfully installed the same media on my work computer that has an XP operating system. Therefore, I am wondering whether my Vista system security settings or sth similar is conflicting my Vista installation process because for some reason the Microsoft Document Explorer is not being installed. I have used Daemon Tools to mount the image file.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Jyrki Mizaras

I'm able to reproduce this and also unable to download the Collect.exe from the link given below. If you can provide me the right click, I can upload the log file completely.

Thanks,

Hello feilongsword (and Jyrki),

I have resolved this bug since Jyrki found a workaround to this specific problem.

However, in the next version of Visual Studio, we have made some significant changes to this code, and we will include this scenario in our product testing.

Thanks,

I am a student from China. My problem is simaliar to Jyrki's, except that my visual studio 2008 and VISTA are simplyfied Chinese edition. I want Microsoft to solve the problem with VS 2008 installion (espacially Document explorer 2008 installion).

jykke,

I'm glad to hear that you've been able to workaround the problem that you've encountered while installing VS 2008. This issue has been assigned to a developer for investigation although without the log files indicated we may not be able to find the root cause. If you did collect these logs it would be great to share with us.

Thanks!

Hi,

I got around this problem by installing MSDN media first which also installs Microsoft Document Explorer. After this i managed tos install VS2008 even tough the Setup proces got stuck while executing action: HxMerge_VSIPCC_VSCC_x86_enu. VS2008 looks like it is working although the installation was interrupted.

Regards,
Jyrki

Thanks for reporting the issue.
In order to fix the issue, we must first reproduce the issue in our labs. We are unable to reproduce the issue with the steps you provided.

It may help if you provide us with:
a setup log file

You can get the log files with the following steps:
1) Download collect.exe from the link below. http://blogs.msdn.com/heaths/attachment/8483493.ashx
2) You may choose to save the tool for later use, or to run directly.
3) The utility creates a compressed cabinet of all the VS and .NET logs to %TEMP%\vslogs.cab.

You can get more details about how to get the log files here:
http://blogs.msdn.com/heaths/archive/2008/05/09/visual-studio-and-net-log-collection-utility.aspx

Thanks again for your efforts and we look forward to hearing from you.
