Description

I would like to see a generalized mechanism for string substitution for all strings obtained from an application configuration file, similar to the way |DataDirectory| can optionally be substituted in a Sql Server connectionString.

"you can create a custom build task". This still doesn't address the issue. The substitution should take place at runtime, not at build time.

This is true; and you can create a custom build task to perform this function for non web technologies. http://www.c-sharpcorner.com/UploadFile/mgold/MSBuildForXml07282006005222AM/MSBuildForXml.aspx

" this issue is addressed by the Web Deployment tool ". I haven't looked at VS2010 yet. But surely the Web Deployment tool would only partially address the issue: the same requirement exists for applications other than web apps (console, winforms, windows services, ...)?

Thanks, this issue is addressed by the Web Deployment tool in Visual Studio 2010.

Thanks for reporting this issue. We are escalating this suggestion to the product unit who works on that specific feature area. The team will review this issue and make a decision on whether they will fix it or not for the next release.

Thank you,
