Description

I was not able to successfully install Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 x86 on my Vista SP2 x64 computer. I selected all options except SQL Express 2008 (I already have the full server). It first hung at one of the two "Data-Tier Application Component xxxxxxx" steps (I don't remember exactly which one) and even the sliding flash on the progress bar was locked. I had to log out to kill the installer. I tried to start the install again, and it said I needed to reboot because there was an install in progress, so I did. When I got the installer started again, it picked up after the "Data-Tier Application Component xxxxxxx" steps. The progress bar for the "Microsoft Visual Studio 2010" step got about 1 mm from the end, and then it hung with "Executing action: VsaEnv_Setup_x86_enu." But this time the sliding flash kept sliding. I rebooted and tried the installer again. This time it offered the "Repair" option so I tried that. I only offered the componenets up thru "Microsoft Visual Studio 2010" as that is all the farther it go on the install passes. It again hung at VsaEnv_Setup_x86_enu. Now, after another reboot, I have tried uninstalling, and it has hung at "Executing action: VsaEnv_Setup_x86_enu." All the buttons, including the window frame buttons, are grayed out except for the minimize button. This is a bad situation where I cannot install it, and I cannot uninstall it. To a certain extent, my computer is now damaged.

I have exactly the same problem trying to install Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate onto a Windows 7 64-bit machine. I downloaded the ISO from https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/downloads/default.aspx?pv=18%3a370

I am getting the same error with my Windows XP SP3 machine trying to install VS 2010 Ultimate.

Hello,

There are new things...
1. At first, when i launched the setup again, it displayed the usual install screen (no repair, no add/remove) I choosed to install VS C++ only. It started from the stage it stalled last time, ...and it finished that stage. I was happy, but it freezed again but at a later stage: at the SQL server phase. ( http://cid-c85b01e54c09cfa6.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/vs2010b2%5E_freeze2.jpg ) I had to switch off again the NB with the power button 5 sec, it was unusable after that freeze too ( I killed almost everything from the taskmanager ). I was able to save the printscreen to a default directory of irfanview, but when I wanted to change folder, the irfanview have freezed too. If i tried to run any program from taskmanager, and wanted to change dir, it freezed either...Before I switched off the machine, I did a collect, here are the results: http://cid-c85b01e54c09cfa6.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/vslogs%5E_freeze%5E_afterSQL.cab

2. When I started again the NB, I have launched the VS2010 as it was not fully installed, just for test it. It started, but after a while, it is freezed just like the installer did, so force switch off again.

3. Restart. I started the installer again. This time it displayed the add/remove, uninstall, repair install screen. I choosed add/remove. I was strange: not only the VS C++ was checked, but the last option was checked too: the sharepoint development (I did not select it earlier ). So I have just unclicked that one, and started the process. And this time, it finished the install... wow.

So now i guess it is finished, but I did not test it yet....

I did it, but the result vslogs.cab is much more smaller than the one I sent. I will try to install vs2010 beta2 again, and will do the collect.

Hello,

I have almost the same situation. My install stops exactly the same point. At first I tried to install the full Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate Beta 2 onto my notebook with 32bit XP SP3, than it hung at this point. After some try with repair, delete I was able to remove it from my system, then I tried to install it on a normal PC with XP SP3 too, it succeeded nicely - this PC has the VS2008Express installed on it - so I tried the install again on my NB, but this time from the image directly - I thought that the dvdrom was wrong - but it hung again. That time I left it in this state, but tried to load a C++ solution file into the half installed system. It was working, I was able to compile, and run the project, but some parts of the Studio was not working (ex. MFC ClassWizard).
At that point I did that Dan: I have a test win7 system (RC version) on that notebook, so I was trying to install the VS2010 onto it, I have selected only the C++ package, and the install was fine. The Studio worked. I was happy, but I was curious, what if I try to install only the C++ onto the XP too, so I went back to XP, uninstalled the halfinstalled product (At first I tried to add/remove package, but it stalled at some pont too, I was able to reboot only with the force shutdown (5sec power off on NB), the whole OS was unusable, I cannot use even the shutdown -s command from taskmanager) SO, when i cleared the system [ I must tell, that I was not cleared, the directories aftere the uninstall] I started again the setup, selected C++ only, but the same result: the install is stalled it is at the same point for about 1 hour, i can see no hdd activity, and no processor activity on the setup process... If you need, I can collect the log with the tool You mentioned to Dan. I will send the file tomorrow.
My notebook is a sony vaio vgn sz3wxp with 1G Ram, and an intel core2duo 2GHz CPU. The XP and the Win7 is 32bit version.

Thank you for looking into this. I did the kinds of things that you suggested, and I started deleting folders associated with Visual Studio 2010 to see if that might help. But I screwed it up even worse; now VS 2008 and SSMS 2008 stopped working and I get an "Installing Visual Studio..." dialog box when starting Word. So I canned that and rebuilt my system with Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. I've got Office, VS 2008, VS 2010 and SSMS 2008 all coexisting.

Hi danjamSQL,

I am glad that you were able to get Visual Studio 2010 Beta2 installed on Win7.

If you would still like to play with your Vista Box to remove Visual Studio, then another thing you can try if you see that the VsaEnv_Setup_x86_enu is hanging during uninstall, is to go to ARP and see if you can't manually uninstall it.

Other things to try might include:
1. try repairing VS prior to uninstalling VS. This can work. I would recommend running repair from Uninstall Programs first.
2. if uninstall still doesn't work then find the original media and try launching setup, then launch repair, then uninstall.

Please let me know if these help solve your Vista issue.

Hi Dan, I've been looking into this but I've concluded that the problem extends beyond my area of expertise. I'm escalating the bug to our Deployment team, who will have a better chance of finding an explanation. You'll be hearing from them shortly - thanks for your help thus far.

I tried uninstalling a couple languages from Visual Studio 2010. It hung at "Executing action: DDConfig_Install_x86.

Hi Dan, thanks for the quick response. Could you upload vslogs.cab to a a file sharing site like http://skydrive.live.com/, and then send me a link when it's available?

Meanwhile, there's a possible workaround I can suggest: Launch Visual Studio setup again, choose Add or Remove features, check or uncheck one of the features, and then continue the installation. This will force the VSA package to be reinstalled, which might solve the problem you're seeing.

One other note: I double clicked an .xml file, expecting it to open in Internet Explorer. However, Visual Studio 2010 popped up its opening dialog box to ask how I wanted it configured (C#, VB.Net, etc.). But I canceled out since I knew that a lot of other stuff had not installed.

Thank you. I have uploaded the vslogs.cab file. Last night I was able to install it on a Win7 (Ulitmate RTM) VM (Microsoft Virtual PC 6.0.192.0) running on my computer with the .iso image captured by the VM. So I tried the uninstall one more time in my real Vista with the .iso mounted as a virtual drive (there was a chance that burning the DVD had a flaw). But it still hung on VsaEnv_Setup_x86_enu during the uninstall.

One note: I had similar problems installing SQL Server 2008 SP1 Tools on my computer with both Vista x64 and Win7 CTP x64. As a DBA I need SQL Server tools. After trying several things and a few OS re-installs, I found that if SQL Server 2008 SP1 was the first software I installed on the fresh OS install, then it installed OK. The problem first cropped up when Microsoft Update tried to push the SP1 update on top of the existing RTM installation.
