Install of VS 2010 RC fails. I uninstalled all the VS 2010 beta 2 components first through Add or Remove programs.

The log file has the following error:

[02/09/10,20:24:07] Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate RC - ENU: [2] CRootComponent::Install(): Cannot install; setup files failed verification.
[02/09/10,20:24:07] Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate RC - ENU: [2] ERROR_INSTALL_PACKAGE_INVALID returned in CRootComponent::Install; the following file is invalid: c:\users\rob\desktop\vs 2010 rc\vs_setup.msi

The first time I tried to install, the .iso file was mounted from a network drive. The second time I tried, I had copied the install files locally. Both times, I got the same error.

Steps to Reproduce

1. Manually remove all .Net 4 / VS 2010 Beta 2 packages using add remove programs
2. Reboot once you're finished uninstalling items in step one
3. Mount the RC iso file from a network share using virtual clone drive
4. Let autorun.exe run
5. Start the install
6. Reboot when the installer asks
7. When system reboots login
8. There will be a dialog saying e:\vs_setup.msi cannot be found.
9. Re-mount the RC iso file from a network share using virtual clone drive
10. Press retry on the dialog from step 8.
11. Install fails after a couple of minutes.

I'm getting this same error on a clean PC with Windows 7 Ultimate x64. One interesting thing I noticed is that the signature of vs_setup.msi is expired as of 7 March 2011 (2 weeks ago).

Thanks MDonoghue for the clue on OneNote. Uninstalled that (2007 version), Visio 2007, VS 2010 etc, ran CCleaner, restarted, reinstalled from disk image and it finally worked.

I got the same error as one of you got below...

Any other workarounds apart from turning off virus scan? ( I have Microsoft security essentials, turning that off didn't help)

Trying to install on a VPC running Windows Server 2008 SP2, SQL Server, Team Foundation Server, and Office. Get the same error. I have no option to disable handwriting recognition. I have no virus software running.

Any help?

If you have the "Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate RC - ENU: [2] CRootComponent::Install(): Cannot install; setup files failed verification." error, try disable your antivirus software.

The same issue on Vista x64 Business SP2.
It install without error on my Windows 7 x32 machine even after vs 2008 but failes on x64 version

Same error on two different environments:

1) Clean installation of Windows 7 Ultimate (native boot VHD)
2) Clean installation of Windows Vista (VM running on Windows Virtual PC)

I think the problem might be handwriting recognition - I had the same problem - disabled handwriting recognition (as per http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/setupprerelease/thread/dbcdcd52-d162-4460-9920-33c9ab54b36f) and it worked fine. I am not using a tablet or windows 7 PC, just a Windows XP SP3 on a VM - but I did have One Note installed.

The ISO I get from the four .RAR's is identical to the one from MSDN Subscribers Downloads, and the SHA1 is correct, so the problem is elsewhere...

I've solved my problem.

I've downloaded the ISO image from Microsoft Download Center and opted to download the complete ISO image as oppose to the four rar files.

The hash value of my ISO file does not match the value on the website.

So I've decided to download the four rar files.
The hash value matched and the installation worked fine as well.

As to where the download error slipped in I don't know.
I'm downloading from South Africa and the file definately comes from a local (SA) server.

I was able to install correctly once I disabled the AVG Free 9.0 Resident Scanner. I did have to completely uninstall the failed install before attempting to install again.

So, if you're running avg and your install fails
1. Disable the resident scanner
2. Uninstall all rc components that did install successfully. Start with Visual Studio 2010 RC
3. Reboot
4. Install RC again

I get the same error on a clean install off Windows 7 x64.

I've expanded the ISO to a local disk, same problem.

I have a 14,389,032-byte vslogs.cab handy. How am I supposed to get it to you guys?

My install (also uninstalled beta 2 first and rebooted -- more than once ;-) also fails: after the point where it displays the disk space requirements, I click Next... and the entire wizard / UI goes away.

The end of dd_install_vs_vstscore_100.txt says:

I'm running from a DVDRW burnt from the ISO file.

Collect.exe running as I'm typing this.

Will also try expanding the ISO to a local directory on my HDD.

Thanks for reporting the issue.
Could you please upload a setup log file to help us investigate the issue?
You can get the log files with the following steps:
1) Download collect.exe from the link below. http://go.microsoft.com/?LinkId=8967043
2) You may choose to save the tool for later use, or to run directly.
3) The utility creates a compressed cabinet of all the VS and .NET logs to %TEMP%\vslogs.cab.

I got the same on Windows 2008 R2 x64.
Same error using the iso mounted on DVD Drive and local copy.

I get a different error, but install fails after I uninstalled all the Beta 2 stuff and try to install RC:

I had the same problem on a Win7 x86 VM while trying to install from a network drive. Once I moved the .iso to my local machine, the install completed just fine.

Hello,
I've the same problem with WINDOWS 2008 R2 and both Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate & Developper Edition.
Session was opened with the domain administrator account (witch is also defined in the administrator group of the machine) .
I resolved it by stopping anti-virus and running setup as administrator.

After a bit of investigation, I found that one of the CAB files on my ISO image had an invalid signature. I determined that my ISO must have been corrupted when I rebuilt my PC. Downloading the image again from MSDN and reattempting the VS2010 installation solved this problem for me.

Clean VS 2010 RC install on very clean Windows XP SP3 (just finished reinstall in the morning).

I tried the install twice, both failed and stopped with
"Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate RC - ENU: [2] CRootComponent::Install(): Cannot install; setup files failed verification."

Disabled AVG Antivirus Resident Shield and all things worked. No need to uninstall previously installed components. Neat.

I'm using Windows 7 x86

After three attempts including burned iso, local mounted iso and run as administrator failed I tried disabling AV

I can confirm that once I disabled McAfee Viruscan Enterprise the install completed successfully.

I suggest that AV is detected and appropriate advice given in the RTM.

This problem is caused by invalid cab files. Make sure your download is okay and you are able to open all cab files. To find missing cabs you can modify vs_setup.msi. Open it with Orca and remove entries that require you to use setup.exe to run msi. Then open command prompt under administrative permissions and run vs_setup.msi.

Now when setup detects some faulty file it tells what file is wrong. I am not sure why this information is suppressed by validation right now but it would be nice if setup gives this inormation.

I made it work as following:
Put the iso on a server. Mount it on the server as F:. Share the F: from the server.
Install from \\192.168.x.x\F\setup.exe

It installed.
