Appropriate topic on MSDN http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/87a13zt0.aspx describes the 'Find and Replace' dialog.

Find options:
[ ] Match case
[ ] Match whole word
[ ] Search up
[ ] Search hidden text
[ ] Use

But such dialog (Quick Find, Find in Files, Quick Replace, Replace in Files) doesn't contain 'Search hidden text' option any more!

Please reconsider "as design" designation as skipping search in collapsed regions can be very helpful.

I want to search in a class definition for certain words in the method declarations without hitting the collapsed comments. I can't do that now that the "Search hidden text" option is gone.

Thanks for your explanation. I've added this to our list of suggestions (in this case, for functionality that we used to have but removed) for the Find dialog; we know it could use an update in general. I'll also file a bug internally to get the documentation updated.

Thanks again for your feedback,

This feature was handy to use for refactoring.

For example: I have a number of nested tables (html controls) and I want to rename all top-level tables to server-side controls. In previous version of VS, I could hide inner tables using menu Outlining -> Toggle Outlining Expansion and replace table -> asp:Table, tr -> asp:TableRow, td -> asp:TableCell with Search hidden text switched off.

I wish to request an optional setting, for example, under menu Edit -> Find and Replace that could switch off the behavior you described: always search hidden text.

Please update the documentation.

Thank you!

Hi Godfather1,

Thank you for logging this issue. We intentionally removed the "Search hidden text" checkbox from the Find and Replace dialog and changed Find's behavior to always search hidden text. I'm resolving this bug as By Design, but please feel free to post again here if you have questions, comments, etc. You also don't specify when/why you use this checkbox; if you're willing to explain when you would or would not use "Search hidden text," we might be able to offer an alternative.

Thanks for using Visual Studio 2010 and sending your feedback!
