Please install SQL Server Data Tools to target SQL Server 2012 (and many more benefits and improvements!). You can install it on top of your Visual Studio 2010 + SP1 from here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/data/gg427686 for free, and use the new SQL Server database project type (you can convert your existing .dbproj's) and the new Schema Compare tool. Learn more about the different between the previous .dbproj's and the new SSDT .sqlproj's and toolset on the team blog and links at the site above.

Re: the comment about data compare: Yes, similarly, the previous VS2010 tools cannot target the new SQL Server 2012. SSDT is where to go for this in almost cases, but does not yet have Data Compare -- it will though!

Thanks,
Sarah McDevitt

FWIW - The data compare tool flat out says "Versions higher than 2008 R2 are not supported". Lame.

Simple to reproduce for me.

Start VS 2010, click on Data -> Schema Compare -> New Schema Comparison

In the Source Schema, choose a SQL 2008 R2 server/database.

In the Target Schema, choose a SQL 2012 (RTM) server/database.

Click OK.

Error message: Schema Compare does not support the specified database.

Happens every time.

Thanks for reporting the issue.
In order to fix the issue, we must first reproduce the issue in our labs. We are unable to reproduce the issue with the steps you provided.

It may help if you provide us with:
a setup log file

You can get the log files with the following steps:
1) Download collect.exe from the link below. <http://go.microsoft.com/?LinkId=8967043>
2) You may choose to save the tool for later use, or to run directly.
3) The utility creates a compressed cabinet of all the VS and .NET logs to %TEMP%\vslogs.cab.

You can get more details about how to get the log files here:
http://blogs.msdn.com/heaths/archive/2008/05/09/visual-studio-and-net-log-collection-utility.aspx

Thanks again for your efforts and we look forward to hearing from you.
