Cannot Repair Network Connections
Damages Normal.dot and dotx files
Missing Token Keys for VS Source Editor
Missing Token Keys for SQL
Corrupt Win32.sys

Details (expand)

Visual Studio/Team Foundation Server/.NET Framework Tooling Version

.NET Framework 4.5

Steps to reproduce

Install IE8 with updates or Windows XP updates after pop-up Virus attack which happens somewhere between http://www.youtube.com or http://www.chanrobles.com. Both areas are "pop-up advertising" heavy.

**REgkey for VS Source Editor direct to a /v location

Actual results

Renamed Win32.sys to old and Window rebuilds it.
Restored Windows XP back to an earlier date - fixes View Source in IE8.
Run -> Winword.exe a fixes corrupt normal .dot and dotx
Ran local vs_setup & Vstore_ by searching for vs*.msi - allows me to open VS
Ran 4.5 Redistributable MSI - does not work***
Cannot run 3.1 Redistributable MSI afterwards.

Options attempted:

Registry hack or MSI Installer commands to force register:

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/msiexec.mspx?mfr=true

.Net Framework Cleanup Tool Removes all .Net versions:

http://blogs.msdn.com/cfs-file.ashx/__key/CommunityServer-Components-PostAttachments/00-08-90-44-93/dotnetfx_5F00_cleanup_5F00_tool.zip

Expected results

...

MSI Installer Commands indicates the version of Installer is not recognized:

To repair the installation package, type: msiexec /fpecms "vs_setup.msi"
To remove or uninstall a package, type: msiexec /x "vs_setup.msi"

MSI Commands run:

Start -> Run:

msiexec /e
Reinstalls if file is missing or an equal or older version is installed.

msiexec /d
Reinstalls if file is missing or a different version is installed.

msiexec /c
Reinstalls if file is missing or the stored checksum does not match the calculated value.

Ran WebFldrs XP built-in utility - no resolve (unrelated)

After .Net Cleanup, you can run't Visual Studio at all - still missing "vs_setup.msi"
**do not disable internet connection** while this is run. Had to restore back to the point before I installed the patch. This is the point where I could open VS. Once .net.zip, you are free to install all patches over again. The log file shows you what was there.

Windows Restore functionality might help some but never resolves VS issues and eventually the Win32.sys crashes / rename will not fix it after second restore, causing complete machine rebuild to factory Dell.

**Good thing I created backups prior to system crash...

Related Notes (Browser differences):

IE 10 windows 8 does not read IE 5 (Flash files) or VS code properly. Does not load items like MindMap Viewer (plug-ins) on Server based web in PHP. * Higher Security Setting for this browser creates this feature in IE 8. Good browser security test is: www.creativevirtuosity.com - it contains large amounts of old HTML 4, Drupal (PHP), etc.

Chrome window 8 code looks like chit with Google objects - very similar to how Mozilla reads perfectly good code.

Vista 256 cipher, reads everything no problem.

Reinstall Notes:
*View Source - good
*Source Editor in VS 2010 - good
*Updates 4.5 that come with VS 2010 Professional - good

After complete Dell Rebuild of XP Pro and SP3 & VS issues go away until IE 8 is installed -

*One issue created:*

No Repair Functionality for Network Connections - Dell self repaired this on reboot
**Not attempting updates for IE8 until a fix is released -

Dell Note:

*Integrated Audio Drivers on Rebuild must be downloaded from Dell
(ignore the bs on the internet for the sigmatel driver - you will never find it)
*The CD-Rom driver exe has to be loaded on a floppy disk to run it. This is also on the Dell site :0
*Yes, we know we can upgrade - it is a Dell....

Please read final notes on Rebuild, IE8 with / without updates still creates issues with Network Connections "Repair" feature.
