User(s) can reproduce this bug
Please see bug 685675 which is reported fixed. I have Win7 64-bit, VS2010, a fairly fast system (Core i7 2.2GHz, 8GB RAM) and started to update the help library:
- I don't see a way to do partial updates
- 220MBit/sec Ethernet tap to a T1 line
- Current on Windows Update as of 1/9/2013.
- Started an update (212 packages), power failed about 12 hours later and the update was STILL NOT DONE
- Started the update again and it started back at downloading package 1 of 212.
-
The previous bug was reported as fixed. This is not consistent with my experience. Possible testing error, please see "Steps to reproduce".

Steps to reproduce

In VS2010 with older Help Library content:
Press F1 to start the Microsoft Help Viewer
Click the Help Library Manager icon to open the Help Library Manager window (in Settings, "I want to use local help" is selected).
Click on "Check for updates online"
Note: it shows "Estimated download size: 2562 MB
Click on Update, and wait for some packages to be transferred.
Disconnect Ethernet connection, wait for exception popup to appear and update to fail. Leave computer long enough to be logged out automatically. May need to close the lid on a laptop / shut it down.
Reconnect Ethernet connection, restart.

Note: I had canceled my (restarted) update to go through the process again and write these steps; it did start again at package 19. So I am wondering whether the previous testing done was sufficient.

Actual results

No way to update in limited-size chunks.
Update started again at package 1.

Expected results

Update should either:
a. install packages as they are downloaded, or
b. allow selecting a limited number of packages for update, or
c. resume download at the failed package (keeping the previous packages)

Greetings,

Thank you for posting a bug in Connect on the Help viewer. The Help viewer in Visual Studio 2012 addresses this issue. If a book down load process is canceled, the next time the Help viewer will continue the download form where it stopped when interrupted in the previous session.

Thank you,

Malcolm Dickson
