In C++, when two classes circularly refer to each other, the problem is resolved by putting the reference of at least one of the classes to the other in the C++ file. However, when the reference is from an XML comment on an abstract method, there is no way to make the reference, resulting in warning C4638.

Visual Studio 2012

Build the following program with Generate XML Documentation Files set to "Yes (/doc)":

struct A;

struct B {
    /// <summary>
    /// <see cref="A::i"/>
    /// </summary>
    virtual void F(A&) = 0;
};

struct A {
    A(B&) {}
    int i;
};

void main() {}

English

Windows 8

English

warning C4638: XML document comment applied to 'B.F(A*!System.Runtime.CompilerServices.IsImplicitlyDereferenced)': reference to unknown symbol 'A::i'.

A compilation with no warnings, possibly with some change to the program to deal with the forward reference issue.
