Description

Opened a solution, VS crashed while loading, but recovered from it. Looking in the resulting xml file generated, it seemed to crash in VS and not in a plug-in. Closing all open documents and then closing the solution, exiting VS and re-opening the solution did not repeat the crash, so it seems the crash is tied to when VS attempts to reopen documents that were open the last time the solution was closed.

Hi legalize,

Thanks for your reply. According to the error message, it seems that this issue is caused by an extension.

Could you please help to confirm if this issue remains with Visual Studio in safe mode? To do this, you need disable Add-ins (e.g. “Tools” | “Add-in Manager”) and run “devenv.exe /safemode”. If it goes away with Visual Studio in safe mode, then you can disable your extensions one-by-one on the Extensions and Updates dialog box (Tools / Extensions and Updates, or type Extensions in the Quick Launch window) until you find out which one is causing the problem.

It would be greatly appreciated if you could provide us with that information as quickly as possible.

Thanks for your efforts and we look forward to hearing from you.

Hi legalize,

Please refer to the following steps to collect a dump file.

1. Start Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 Feedback Tool
2. Select "Add to an existing feedback"
3. Select type: Crash
4. Record a repro: When the dialog box appears, select the running Visual Studio instance for which you want to show the steps that cause a crash. When the crash occurs, click on the "Stop Record" button. After you do this, two files are attached to your bug report - an AutomaticCrashDump.zip file that contains information about the crash and a ReproSteps.zip file that shows the repro steps.
5. Submit

It was one of those things where VS gave me an error dialog pointing me to the attached ActivityLog xml file, but didn't generate a crash dump.
