Workaround(s)
Currently, if a server is configured to get it's updates from a WSUS Server, the only options you have to perform the install are Install Updates and Shut Down - needless to say this is incredibly annoying on any OS (this applies to Vista too) but is almost laughable on a server OS - can this not be Install Updates and Restart instead?

Please describe how you would like this behavior to change?
Can this be changed to Install Updates and Restart, or can this option be added?
Please provide a justification for why you think this change should be made?
Because it is rediculous to have to shut a machine down to install updates, and to then have to wait and manually turn it back on again.

Can we get an update on this? It's very frustrating having to relocate to the data centre to be able to patch machines.

This is especially dangerous when you are terminal sessioned into a machine that many miles away. This is one of the first things I disable when I setup a server.

Absolutely needed!!!... Please Microsoft, get out of your Vista mindset and start thinking!

Is there any progress on this?
This would be a nice option when updating all of our servers here.
Would also be nice for our workstations.

Many many IT pros I've talk to, have the same remark!

My opinion on this one:
* for client OS'es: leave 'Install and shutdown', and add one for 'Install and restart'. Two options enabled by default.
* For servers OS'es: disable 'Install and shut down' by default. Enable 'Install and restart' instead.
There is already a GPO option to hide 'Install and shut down', so adding the additional one to a GPO shouldn't be that hard either.

Thank you for taking this issue into consideration for a future Security Patch/Hotfix/Service Pack or a next Server OS.

I have a remote server that I need to install updates on regularly. Right now, I have an install and shut down. That does me no good since no one is by the server to turn it back on. It is ridiculous that this option does not exist on the server OS versions.

Everyone is ahead of me but I'm here now. PLEASE add a choice to Install Updates and Restart. I found this site because I am looking for a way to do this. Many others in my field wish for this also.

This one really needs to be there.

The *FIRST THING* our head system administrator asked about Windows 2008 R2 was "Did they finally fix that stupid Install Updates and Shutdown button?". Seriously.
