MS has publically stated that they are phasing out Onecare. they also stated it would not work with the new OS.    Get used to not having it and plan on purchasing another similar program if you want to use Windows 7.

Windows OneCare is not compatible with Windows 7. Because a new Anti-Malware will come from Microsoft which is for Free it called "Morro" and its beta will avalable soon. If you want to use Windows OneCare then you need to have supported Opertaing System (Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista ). However if you want to continue with Windows 7 you could use beta version of Kasperky or Norton 360 v3 beta for free till 90 days but a long as they are beta after 90 days you can use another 90 days as free trial, they will not count as trial usage. You can use Kaspersky or Norton until beta version of Morro release.

I hope this help you.

According to this blog post, OneCare can be made to run on Windows 7:

Bit tricky to get it to work, but looks promising...

Although Microsoft recommends Kasperky and Norton 360, I tried AVG Free 8.0.233 in my Windows 7 Build 7000 and it is working fine. I'll be using this Anti virus until Morro becomes a reality. I also canceled my subscription to OneCare.

I have tried Kasperky, Norton, AVG and a few others to no great success. Each has its own issues with Windows 7 - some with BSOD and others with Windows Error Reporting system. I have uninstalled and cleaned my system from all of them. While the work around is a bit tricky to make work, and it will place an anit-virus program in compatability mode (which is not recommened) it does appear to be the most promising.

While other disparage OneCare, it has done a terrrific job on all my systems, and has allowed me to monitor the entire family from a single console.

I tried the 'work around' and successfully installed, but the "Windows Live OneCare" service nor the AV service would start.

ONECARE generated backups are UNRECOGNIZABLE and unaccessable from Windows 7!!!!
User MUST retrieve all backups created by OneCare and transfer to external media BEFORE deleting XP or Vista!!! Seems to me that Microsoft ought to mention that to OneCare subscribers before Windows 7 launch October 22, 2009.
p.s. Kaspersky works great in Windows 7.
p.p.s. Microsoft will issue refund on remainder of OneCare subscription.
