SVG is the future of icons in general, and to not support SVG icons, only makes a web devs life harder, if you want your platforms to be commonly supported, you need to accept favicons that are either high res PNGs, or preferably SVGs.

Side note: IE 11 supports PNG and GIF favicons, if you didn't know.

But please consider this - the W3C even have a <link rel="icon" sizes="any" /> attribute specifically for the use of SVG.

I was going to ask the exact same question - I'd love to have SVG favicon support in IE 12. It would save so much time, not having to create a multiple-resolution ICO with 8 different sizes or so.
