Description

Scrolling in IE11 makes background image jerk up and down when using "background-position:fixed" CSS property. I'm not sure if this also happens for touch or win7 but it creates a bad effect when scrolling through websites with fixed background and need to be fixed. Also note that i'm using the latest IE 11.0.3 version.

This is still an issue with IE11 on Windows 10. Also the URL does not work @Louis.

Hi Louis,

The URL gives a "Page not found" error. Can you let us know where we might be able to track the status of this issue now?

Thanks.

Issue is still present in Microsoft Edge browser. I created a new instance of the workaround @Hanoncs posted, but with useragent /Edge\/12\./
Note that the workaround does not affect touch and keyboard scrolling.

@Hanoncs
Yes, I also saw that workaround on SO some while back. Very decent, considering.     http://stackoverflow.com/a/28529089

Here's a demo based on it. You can click the background to view several variations of the issue.

I just posted a workaround. I tested on Windows 8 and IE11.

I am experiencing this issue as well - position:fixed elements jitter when scrolling in IE11, Win 8.1.

Tried to disable smooth scrolling via jQuery which seemed to work for mouse scroll, but issue is still present for touchpad scrolling and arrow keys scroll.

@Microsoft
What is status of this issue? This bug is still present for me on win8.1 + IE11 (all updates installed).

I can only reproduce this with Windows 8; Windows 7 seems fine, even with Smooth Scrolling turned on. Does that jibe with anyone else?

Matthew Giacomazzo: background-position:fixed works fine for me.. like here: http://focuslabllc.com/
only position:fixed background property for elements causes the issue.

Also note this isn't limited to background-position:fixed. It also affects any position: fixed objects as well...

Loading up http://ihatetomatoes.net/merry-christmallax/ you can see a clear difference in performance when using the mouse wheel vs clicking and dragging the scrollbar. A lot of these sites use https://github.com/Prinzhorn/skrollr which animates between scroll positions but it appears IE is causing things to jump ahead first. Firefox and Chrome do not have this issue and are silky smooth with default installs.
