In SQL 2016 CTP 2.2, new syntax allows you to specify the start and end date columns as "hidden" which is a big help toward adopting system-versioned tables in existing applications.

However, this functionality is limited to datetime2 columns where you specify "generated always as row {start | end}".

Many applications store a Reason Code, Change Comment or similar metadata which is only relevant in the context of the history table, and thus should only be visible there.
