there was linked server created with some name and Data source-> real sql server name.
1 day the real sql server was retiered and new named sql server has been used instead
All code is using 'some name' of linked server pointed to old Data source- old sql server name:
and there is no way to just change the old sql server name to new - in the Data source.
Just drop and recreate linked server

We took a look at this bug along with several others recently. Unfortunately, triaging it against other critical bugs, I do not think we would get to investigating this in the near future. However, we have taken note of this internally, and when we revisit this functionality in the future, we will try and get this resolved.

Thanks for writing in to Microsoft.

Hi Eugene Zhitomirsky,

Thank you for reporting this problem to us. We will try to address the issue post Katmai release.
The current workaround would be to drop and recreate the datasource.
