I have resolved this issue a duplicate of one of our work items tracking making this experience better in the future. I believe Yuhong helped you work around your problem but if you are still having issues please reactivate this bug and provide details on your current issues.

Thanks,

The title of registry key is red herring.    We can ignore it.

Carl Rabeler (customer) and I spent a lot of time on this case behind scene. In summary cleaning of an old build and installing of a new Katmai repeated several times due to several failures. None of them is related to setup functionality, but it jeopardized confidence. The good news is that we have some improvement done already in CTP6 Refresh that supports repairing of a failed install, so customers can continue to work around the failed install instead of completely uninstalling one.

Here is the detail of what happened.

Initially the uninstall failed in SqlRun_SQL.msi CA RestoreSetupParams.

<Func Name='RestoreSetupParams'>
……
Error Code: 29527
MSI (s) (6C!F8) [13:36:03:912]: Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (64-bit) -- Error 29527. The setup has encountered an unexpected error in datastore. The action is RestoreSetupParams. The error is : Source File Name: datastore\machineconfigscopeproperties.cpp
Compiler Timestamp: Thu Jan 31 03:20:06 2008
     Function Name: SqlInstallConfigScope.ProductCode
Source Line Number: 186

I started to debug that CA, and the CA just run fine. Then I stopped the debug, and back to repeat Katmai uninstall from Add/Remove control panel.    It succeeded and Katmai was uninstalled. In conclusion I didn’t do any tweak, and uninstall succeeded. The machine was ready for Carl Rabeler to install a new build. What happened after that is:

•    First attempt of install – failed on SSCERuntime package because a previous one “Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1 Beta English” was remained and affected its installation. We uninstalled the failed one, cleaned up the machine, and ready for the next install.
•    Second attempt of install – failed on SQL Engine configuration as it reported “network path was not found”. The error message suggests some network glitch, but we don’t have further log information to confirm what the real cause is.    We uninstalled the failed one, cleaned up the machine, and ready for the next install.
•    Third attempt of install – Succeeded.

It is not a good experience with the customer. One of reasons is that we didn’t support Repair of a failed install in CTP6.    This has been changed in CTP6 Refresh that supports repairing, and can have customers avoid this kind of situation like this case.
