Description

I exported my list of registered servers from SQL Server 2005 management studio (Registered servers window -> Export...

I tried to import them into the registered servers window of SQL Server 2008 management studio (Registered servers window. Tasks -> import)

How about this scenario:

I upgraded Management Studio from 2005 to 2008 on my local machine. All registered servers were detected and automatically added from 2005 to 2008. No problem there. I have since exported all of my registered servers from 2008 (2005 no longer lives on my local machine) to the default .regsrvr file type. When I attempted to import this into another SQL Server 2008 instance on a different machine, I get the following error. Is this also by design?

TITLE: Import Registered Servers
------------------------------

Cannot import from O:\RegisteredServers.regsrvr.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

The operation 'Import' failed. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.RegisteredServers)

If the formats are different, it would make more sense for the application to say that rather than providing an error that looks like a bug or problem. I think it would be good to have a SP3 for 2005 have the ability to export to a 2008 native format, or have 2008 be able to read in the 2005 export. This is an extremely important migration point for large SQL Server environments. I previously had to write a C# application to export my 2000 settings into a 2005 import format, and it looks like I have to code a custom creation again.

Thank you for your feedback. We do support upgrading registered servers from 2005 to 2008 on the same computer. However, SSMS in SQL 2008 doesn't understand the 2005 registered server export format.
Thank you,
