SSAS connection string properties wrongly persisted
7/31/2008 2:31:39 AM
User(s) can reproduce this bug
I've been using the new functionality in SQLMS for supplying connection string properties when connecting to Analysis Services. Unfortunately it looks like once I have used a connection string property it keeps on being applied for new connections, even when the connection string property text box is empty
SQL Server 2008 Release Candidate 0
Tools (SSMS, Agent, Profiler, etc.)
Windows Server 2003 (all x64 editions)
Operating System Language
Steps to Reproduce
Open a connection to a AS2008 instance of SSAS, and supply the connection string properties "disable prefetch facts=true; cache ratio=1". Connection is successful and the properties are applied. Now disconnect and reconnect to a SSAS2005 SP1 instance. Note that the text box on the 'Additional Connection Parameters' tab is blank.
When you connect to the AS2005 SP1 instance you get an error message saying that the disable prefetch facts property is not known. This is as expected because it was only introduced in AS2005 SP2 - but it shouldn't be being used in the first place, because I haven't specified any connection string properties and the text box on 'Additional Connection Properties' is blank!
This also happens when subsequently connecting to any version of AS, which makes using connection string properties very difficult indeed - you don't know when they are being applied or not unless you run a Profiler trace, which is a pain.
1) With each new connection to AS the list of connection string properties is wiped, and no connection string properties are remembered from the previous connection
2) The connection string used from the previous connection is remembered, and more importantly displayed in the text box when you reconnect so you can see what's being used and edit it. This is the best option.

Hello Christopher. Thanks for the feedback. We triaged this issue and at this time do not plan to address this in a future version of SQL Server. -Walter A Jokiel, Program Manager, SQL Server (email@example.com)

What version of SSMS are you seeing this issue occur in? (Help -> About...)
I'm unable to reproduce the issue with additional parameters being used but not showing up in the "Additional Connection Parameters" page.
I am able to verify that we no longer seem to remember the Connection Params from previous connections but I wanted to verify that you are indeed seeing a full resurgence of the bug as was originally reported.

This bug was fixed, but has now reappeared in SQL Server Management Studio 2012 (and I think in earlier versions)!

This issue has been fixed in the upcoming Katmai SP2. Now the Additional Connection Parameters from previous connection are not only remembered but also displayed in the textbox.
