Do you have a workaround to suggest to us?

Hi EWhitlow,
Thank you for your bug report regarding our inability to connect to SSIS 2005 SP2. There is a known backward compatability issue that is still open with our SSIS team. I'm closing this issue since we have this on file already.
Thank you,
Bill Ramos

I looked at the duplicate item for this one and it is still unclear if this is the way it is supposed to work or not. This Closed(By Design) is not helpful. SSMS is backwards compatible is every way BUT this one? So it is necessary to have a 2005 SSMS installed to use this in a mixed environment? Something so simple and yet so stupid is "By Design"?

I have the same problem: can't connect to SQL 2005 SSIS from SQL 2008 instance.

I came across this when researching the same issue: http://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=315076
Reading Bucks' response, the first paragraph states that only SSMS 2005 can connect to a SSIS 2005 service. Yet the second paragraph contradicts that saying SSMS 2008 can connect and manage SSIS packages in both 2005 and 2008 databases (msdb). In order to do that, you need to connect to the service and that is the contradiction.

I have seen a few other items that are similar to this but are for RC or CTP versions that were closed by design. However the comments in those indicated that this should work. This defect is for the RTM version.
