Description

Using auto updates it fails every time

XP with SP3

There is a folder called C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\SQL9Express_Hotfix_KB955706_SQLEXPR.EXE on my computer.

Inside the folder, there is a SqlSetup0006.cab and a Summary.txt, and a Files subfolder.
The content of Summary.txt is


Microsoft SQL Server 2005 9.00.4035.00
==============================
OS Version     : Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (Build 2600)
Time            : Fri Apr 23 17:25:05 2010


Setup succeeded with the installation, inspect the log file completely for status on all the components.

I'm seeing the same failure on XP Pro SP3. I've tried 3 times, rebooted between each try, and it always fails with 0x2B2F

I now have 27 total sites reporting this same issue!!!

1.    All sites have XP SP3 and SQL 2005 Express. All started on or about 3/18/2009.
2.    Each night automatic updates tries to install SQL Express 2005 SP3.
3.    During this time the database is shutdown by the install.
4.    The install fails with error code 11055 (0x2B2F) “Unable to install windows installer msi file”
5.    After the failure, sql is NOT restarted.
6.    All panasonic software operations will not function until the database is restarted. Rebooting the system or restarting the service seems to work.
7.    This seems to be unrelated to MSXML 6.0 SP2 as some sites do not have it.
8.    I have manually run windows update in one of these sites and it had the same failure.

I have a test system here with XP SP3 and SQL Express 2005. Last night, it ran the update successfully. I can assume from this that not all systems with XP SP3 and SQL 2005 Express will fail.
