Several settings within SQL Server Management Studio are also present within Visual Studio such as the number of spaces to insert in place of a tab.

You should be able to import and export appropriate settings between Visual Studio and SQL Server Management Studio.

At the very least font and color settings should be able to be exported and imported between the tools.

It should also be possible to export settings from SSMS in the same way as you can do with Visual Studio today.

Hi! Doug, thank you for writing to Microsoft.

SSMS in Denali is based on the Visual Studio 2010 Isolated Shell and one of the many features we’ve enabled in this release is enhanced keyboard shortcuts. We have also added the support to Import & Export settings between SSMS in Denali CTP3 and Visual Studio 2010. You can now easily import/export settings that are common to both products (e.g. keyboard shortcuts, fonts, colors, tab spacing, etc.). Also, settings specific to a product will not be imported in the other as you might expect.

Please take a look at this blog for more details: and tell us what you think.

I keep a number of shortcuts to save me from writing those "select count(*) from" for every single query. The problem is, I have to go back and add these shortcuts on every machine and every time I rebuild.

Import/Export settings is absolutely a must.

I would highly encourage you to provide some form of import / export settings capability in SQL Server 2008 R2 as it makes it really difficult to move from machine to machine with a seemless experience with SSMS.

Hi Doug,
Thank you for your request to leverage VS settings with SSMS. We will look at this ability in a future release of SQL Server when we upgrade our VS shell.
Thank you,
Bill Ramos
