Duplicated lines in SSMS 2008 R2 activity monitor
as Won't Fix
10/6/2009 8:18:46 AM
User(s) can reproduce this bug
When a SQL session is executing using a parallel plan (multiple excution contexts), the activity monitor do a cross join on these line (ie: if there are 3 execution contexts, 9 lines are displayed).
SQL Server 2008 R2 August CTP
Tools (SSMS, Agent, Profiler, etc.)
Windows Vista SP1
Operating System Language
Steps to Reproduce
create an index on a very big table (this should use a parallel plan, if the server has multiple processors).
If this does not work, find another way to have a long transaction with a parallel plan.
Look at the "processes" pane in the activity monitor.
Lines are duplicated (4 instead of 2, 9 instead of 3, etc).
Lines shouldn't be duplicated.

That is pathetic. It is my understanding that this incorrect query is still used by the Activity Monitor in SQL Server 2012 and SQL Server 2014. It should be fixed. It is not that complex to fix this query that is used every day by thousands and thousands of SQL Server users. The Activity Monitor is a core tool for SQL Server .... it should be accurate.

We took a look at this bug along with several others recently. Unfortunately, triaging it against other critical bugs, I do not think we would get to investigating this in the near future. However, we have taken note of this internally, and when we revisit this functionality in the future, we will try and get this resolved.
Thanks for writing in to Microsoft.
