Hi

I have been struggling with this error for month and tried almost every googable hint.

Finally found out the the error in my case was related to an old version of MSXML 6.0 installed. Found 2 solutions.
1) Uninstall the existing MSXML 6.0 from "Add or Remove Programs"
2) Before running setup.exe, upgrade your existing MSXML 6.0. This can be done by executing msxml6.msi from the SQL Server media.

Brgds,
Carsten

There is no recommended solution for this. How can it be designated as 'RESOLVED"?

Yes, I have the same error and SQL 2000 was previously installed.

Thanks for reporting this issue. Please attach all setup logs located at %programfiles%\microsoft sql server\100\setup bootstrap\log.

This issue looks similar to Connect ID 534520, where SQL Server 2000 was installed before. Could you confirm if there was any SQL Server 2000 installation done on this machine before?

Thanks,
Max Verun
