SQL Server 2008 Express will not install on Windows 8 (32-bit); at best, you will get an XML error, and at worst, you may experience BSoD.

See repro steps for details. The installer won't even run, but you can get around that with compatibility mode.

This is now RTM:

Adding to the mix, I cannot get either SQL Server Express 2008 R2, nor SQL Serve 2012 Express to be recognized by Windows 8 RTM.

Management Studio works on both, but WebMatrix and Visual Studio 2012 do not want to connect to the DB. Permissions have been worked on ad nauseum, programs opened with elevated privileges, but nothing gets SQL to be seen.

Is WebMatrix even compatible yet?

Why is this resolved as non-reproducible? I can provide you with a machine image that will easily reproduce this issue.
