Description

When I press F1 in the Visual Studio text editor to look something up in help, it starts Document Explorer in Online mode.

The mouse cursor flickers between the correct cursor (i.e. the pointer, I-beam or hand, depending on what's under the pointer) and the hourglass (actually the circular thing -- I'm on Vista).

Investigating with Process Monitor reveals that dexplore.exe is continually looking at the following registry keys:

I'm using Vista Ultimate x64. UAC is on, I'm not in the local Administrators group.

I have had the same issue with new setups of Visual Studio 2008 SP1 on Windows XP on an Acer Aspire One, and with Vista Business on a Dell Precision T7400.

Having run the F1 Help for the first time, and selected "Use Online" help, this problem manifests itself. On a Quad core machine, the dexplore process will consume one core.

I have not looked into the issue any further.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to submit your comments about the mouse flickering when you press F1. We are in the process developing a help viewer that should handle the f1 issue you describe. The help viewer will be in a future release of visual studio. We have reviewed your comments and will consider them for the future release.

Best Regards

Same problem here. VS 2008 SP1 on WinXP. If I had epilepsy this would give me a seizure. I can get rid of the flickering by scrolling down to the bottom of the page. This works until I open another page.

Note: This is only happening to me when using online content. The MSDN web site was doing the same thing to me also. I cleared my cache and now the MSDN web site doesn't flicker anymore, however, the Document explorer continues to flicker the cursor.

Thanks for your feedback. We are escalating this bug to the product unit who works on that specific feature area. The team will review this issue and make a decision on whether they will fix it or not for the next release.

Thank you,
Visual Studio Product Team

Oh, I forgot to mention: dexplore.exe checks that sequence of registry keys something like 4 or 5 times a second, continuously.
