Cannot install .Net Framework 4.0 Beta 1

User(s) can reproduce this bug
Cannot install Visual Studio 2010 Beta 1. The error log shows this message:
[05/18/09,14:52:52] Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Beta 1: Error code 1 for this component means "Incorrect function.
[05/18/09,14:52:52] Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Beta 1: Component Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Beta 1 returned an unexpected value.
[05/18/09,14:52:53] Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Beta 1: Return from system messaging: Incorrect function.
I tried installing the .Net 4.0 framework using the stand-alone installer on MSDN and get this message:
The .NET Framework version 4 cannot be installed because the .NET Framework version 1.0 is already installed on your computer. For more information, see the Readme file.
Of course all the readme hyperlinks just take you to the Microsoft Downloads homepage and not to any information.

I see that this problem has been fixed and closed, but FYI, the Comments that state that if you have .NET 2.0 or later installed (side-by-side) works it not true. I had 1.1, 1.1 hotfix, 2.0 SP2, 3.0 SP2 and 3.5 SP1 installed and even after uninstalling 1.1 and the hotfix, Visual Studio 2010 would not install.

This issue has been addressed and the fix will appear in our Beta 2 release. Thank you for letting us know this impacted you.

When I got this error, the readme that opens states (twice) that you can't install 4.0 if you 'already' have 1.0 installed. Uninstalled 1.1, but wasn't able to uninstall 1.0 as no available option and it still fails.
We must be able to install side-by-side with older versions - I thought that was the whole point of .net, to get away from dll hell - now the solution to dll hell is just not allow an install??

I have XP SP 3 and I too have the same problem. I also tried the stand-alone install of .NET 4.0 and received the response that ; I also de-installed .NET 1.1 and tried the installs again but that did not work. Very frustrating.

I experience the same issue, but I don't have .NET Framwork 1.0. I even uninstalled .NET Framework 1.1 and the error still persists. I have a lot of other staff installed on my computer, but never experienced any problems. The error message is absolutely not descriptive. Hope you receive more detailed log. Any walkaround appreciated so that I don't have to run it on Virtual PC. Thanks. Igor

This is a known issue with Side-by-Side between .NET 1.0 and .NET 4.0.
If you had a later version (.NET 2.0 or higher), side-by-side works.

Uninstalling version 1.0 of the .Net Framework allowed me to install .Net 4.0 Beta1 and VS Team System 2010 Beta1.
