Hi Thomas -

In the commands you entered, you're trying to delete registry entries from HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\.... If you're on a 32-bit machine, you need to delete those entries from HKLM\Software\....

Please try that - it should fix your problem.

The 1/20/2010 at 10:57 AM commands (run as administrator) "fixed" the problem, but it returned on reboot.

Log of the "fix"-

I installed then removed all of VS 2010 Express. I then installed VS 2010 Integrated Shell. I now cannot use that because of these errors. I have no VS 2010 DVD from which to reinstall the mentioned tools. I am also on a 32-bit only machine, so these 64-bit WoW registry keys are not the problem.

What can I do to get VS working again?

I had the same issue. It was solved by the scripts from Microsoft.

In case anyone is still trying to duplicate the problem Here is what I did to get into the broken state...

I had installed Visual Studio 2010 v10.0.30319.1 RTMRel on Windows 7 64bit to the default location (C:\Program Files (x86)\) Then realized that I wanted it installed somewhere else. So I immediately uninstalled it, then re-installed it to C:\Program Files Fast (x86)\

Both times I did a custom install, unchecked C++, F#, Sql Server, and Dotfuscator.

Thanks Justin!

It looks like this was caused by an uninstall bug where some registry entries were left around - the uninstall process should have deleted them. We were not able to reproduce this behavior internally , so I'm going to resolve this issue as closed.

Also, can you run the following commands and past the output into this bug?

dir /s "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\Extensions"
dir /s "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\CommonExtensions"

the problem registry entry is being added by either “devenv /resetuserdata” or “devenv /setup”. See highlighted below. The new instructions should tell us which of these is adding this, and get us an ActivityLog.xml that might shed some light on where this registry data is coming from.

Please try the following:

1. Run the following commands from a VS2010 shell:

reg delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0_Config\ /f

reg query HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0_Config\

reg query HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0_Config\AutoLoadPackages\{adfc4e66-0397-11d1-9f4e-00a0c911004f} /v {7A4E8D96-5D5B-4415-9FAB-D6DCC56F47FB}

del "%APPDATA%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\ActivityLog.xml"

devenv /resetuserdata /log

reg query HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0_Config\AutoLoadPackages\{adfc4e66-0397-11d1-9f4e-00a0c911004f} /v {7A4E8D96-5D5B-4415-9FAB-D6DCC56F47FB}

rename "%APPDATA%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\ActivityLog.xml" ActivityLog_2010_01_05_ResetUserData.xml

reg delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0_Config\ /f

reg query HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0_Config\AutoLoadPackages\{adfc4e66-0397-11d1-9f4e-00a0c911004f} /v {7A4E8D96-5D5B-4415-9FAB-D6DCC56F47FB}

devenv /setup /log

reg query HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0_Config\AutoLoadPackages\{adfc4e66-0397-11d1-9f4e-00a0c911004f} /v {7A4E8D96-5D5B-4415-9FAB-D6DCC56F47FB}

rename "%APPDATA%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\ActivityLog.xml" ActivityLog_2010_01_05_Setup.xml

2. Post the output from the commands above to this bug.
3. Attach the files "APPDATA%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\ActivityLog_2010_01_05_ResetUserData.xml" and "%APPDATA%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\ActivityLog_2010_01_05_Setup.xml" to this bug.

I need to figure out what on your machine is causing those auto-load package entries to be added to the 10.0_Config registry.
Looks like the registry was updated as part of either devenv /setup or /resetuserdata.

Please try the following:

1. Run the following commands from a VS2010 shell:

reg delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0_Config\ /f

devenv /setup /log

reg query HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0_Config\AutoLoadPackages\{adfc4e66-0397-11d1-9f4e-00a0c911004f} /v {7A4E8D96-5D5B-4415-9FAB-D6DCC56F47FB}

2. Attach the file "APPDATA%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\ActivityLog.xml" to this bug. There's an existing ActivityLog.xml, so you may need to rename the new one.

Posted by jmatthewsr on 12/15/2009 at 5:17 AM
Note, that the first attempt to copy and paste the commands didn't work because of a missing '%' on the first command, so I just re-ran everything, that is why there are 2 attempts for the first couple of commands.

Problem still occurs, activity log attached.

Actually, try this:

reg delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0_Config /f

reg query HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0_Config
Posted by Microsoft on 12/10/2009 at 10:16 AM
This is really weird. The reg delete command is reporting that the 10.0_Config key is being succesfully deleted, but subsequent reg query commands are reporting it still present. Am I missing something here?

Would it be possible for me to use remote assitance to connect to your machine? If so, you can contact me via email: mike-dot-kaufman-at-microsoft-dot-com, and we can set up the details. If not, I'll need to think some more about what is happening.

What OS is on this machine?

Weird. Your comments from 12/3 are indicating that the reg key isn't being deleted. That is, the delete reports success, but the subsequent query is returning a value.

Here are some more instructions to verify I'm not crazy. We'll doulble-check that the keys are being deleted, then we'll do some more "robust" clean-up of VS initialization.

1. Reboot your machine.
2. Open a VS dev10 command shell with admin priviledges (via Start|All Programs|Microsoft Visual Studio 2010|Visual Studio Tools)
3. Run the following commands, back-to-back, in the command shell.

reg query HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0_Config\AutoLoadPackages\{adfc4e66-0397-11d1-9f4e-00a0c911004f} /v {7A4E8D96-5D5B-4415-9FAB-D6DCC56F47FB}
reg query HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0_Config\AutoLoadPackages\{93694fa0-0397-11d1-9f4e-00a0c911004f} /v {7A4E8D96-5D5B-4415-9FAB-D6DCC56F47FB}
reg query HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0_Config\Packages\{7A4E8D96-5D5B-4415-9FAB-D6DCC56F47FB} /s

reg delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0_Config\ /va /f

reg query HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0_Config\AutoLoadPackages\{adfc4e66-0397-11d1-9f4e-00a0c911004f} /v {7A4E8D96-5D5B-4415-9FAB-D6DCC56F47FB}
reg query HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0_Config\AutoLoadPackages\{93694fa0-0397-11d1-9f4e-00a0c911004f} /v {7A4E8D96-5D5B-4415-9FAB-D6DCC56F47FB}
reg query HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0_Config\Packages\{7A4E8D96-5D5B-4415-9FAB-D6DCC56F47FB} /s

reg delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0 /va /f
rmdir /s "%APPDATA%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0" REM this path might be slightly different on XP
rmdir /s "%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0"

devenv /resetuserdata
devenv /setup

4. Restart VS, verify error occurs.
5. Shut down VS.
6. Verify that there are no devenv.exe processes running (e.g., via task manager)
7. Run commands in step 2 again.
8. Update this bug with the output from step 2 & step 7.

After deleting the key and verifying it's deletion as described, launching VS2010 and loading my project resulted in the same bootstrap error.
Posted by Microsoft on 12/7/2009 at 10:55 AM

This is really odd. It looks like the reg delete isn't working for some reason.

Can you run reg edit and manually try to delte the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\
10.0_Config.

Then shut down regedit, re-open and check if the key is there.

Yes, all instances were closed. I re-ran the reg delete, with all instances closed and the problem is still occuring:

The operation completed successfully.

Hmmm. I'm haven't been able to repro this on beta 2 or on recent builds - from my tests, VS is cleaning up that 10.0_config registry section during uninstall.

Try running the following command from an elevated prompt, then restart VS. It should clear up your problem. Let me know if it doesn't.

reg delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0_Config\ /va /f

Posted by jmatthewsr on 12/2/2009 at 5:16 PM
I can wait. I also remembered that after the initial "full" install and uninstall I also manually uninstalled everything beta 2 related (4.x .net beta, etc) via add/remove programs. After doing that the minimal c++ install I described was installed to get me where I am at now.
Posted by Microsoft on 12/2/2009 at 5:11 PM

Great. I'm trying to reproduce the behavior you're experiencing on Beta2 and also on more recent builds.

I should have have a simple work-around for you - but if you bear with me for a moment, I want to verify I can repro this in-house before your machine is cleaned up. If you're blocked by this issue, and you can't wait until later today/tomorrow for the work-around, then let me know and I'll post it now.

Thanks much for your help in tracking this down!

I had previously installed Visual Studio Beta 2 selecting a "full" install, but was getting an exception in the IDE (reported here as a bug). I removed that install and then re-installed selecting only components necessary for C++ development.

FYI, I also have VS 2008 installed.
Posted by Microsoft on 12/2/2009 at 10:58 AM
Did you have a previous installation of Visual Studio on the machine? Or did you install another VS Sku (e.g., C# express or VB express)?
Posted by jmatthewsr on 12/2/2009 at 5:33 AM
Microsoft.Data.Entity.Design.BootstrapPackage.dll is not in the directory you specified, nor is it in the entire vs 2010 directory tree.

I did a custom installation, choosing basically only the bare minimum to develop C++ apps. I would have to go through the install screens again to see if I remember exactly which options, but I do remember removing all other programming languages, SQL Engine, Crystal Reports, etc.

Attached is a screen shot of the VS2010 setup screen in maintenance mode.
Posted by Microsoft on 12/1/2009 at 8:52 PM
Thanks for the core dump & the screen shot. It looks like the file Microsoft.Data.Entity.Design.BootstrapPackage.dll is either not present or corrupted. Can you check for this file on your machine? It should be in the following location:

     %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE

Also, do you recall if you chose the default installation of VS? Or did you choose a custom install? If the latter, can you recall what options you chose to install/not install? For example, did you not install managed language support?

Thanks a lot for your help in tracking down what is happening here.

I am unable to repro the error on VS Beta 2. I tried on both 64-bit windows 7 & 32-bit windows 7.

From the activity log, it looks like there may have been a problem before the MDED.BootstrapPackage loaded, specifically during the C++ project load. I reviewed the MDED.BootstrapPackage code paths and identified a place where some up-stream errors may result in a null-reference exception.

If possible, can you please generate a core dump of when the error occurs? Ideally, you would do this as follows:

1. Open a first instance of VS (repro instance)
2. Open a second instance of VS (debug instance).
3. In debug instance, set your symbol path to the microsoft public symbol servers.
4. Attach the debug instance to the repro instance, choosing to debug native & managed (netfx 4.0) code.
5. In the debug instance, choose "Debug|Exceptions" and choose to break on all exceptions.
6. In the repro instance, repro the failure.
7. You should see debug instance trap on a series of innocuous exceptions - e.g., GUID format exceptions and resource-load exceptions. Just ignore these.
8. Wait until you see an exception occur that is "interesting". In particular, anything that occurs in the MDED.BootstrapPackage module. When the exception occurs, generate a core dump from the debug processes' Debug menu.
9. Upload the core dump to this bug.

Thanks for submitting this bug. We've tried this project with multiple different machines running the latest builds of VS2010 and have not been able to repro it. We have to assume that something went wrong with the installation of VS on your machine. We'll close this bug for now but I will alert the person who wrote the bootstrap package and see if he has any ideas.

Uploaded a project that exhibits this behavior on my system. The steps to reproduce are:

1) Close all existing instances of Visual Studio
2) Open Visual Studio 2010 beta 2
3) Open the expat.sln file
After opening the file the error should occur. The error occurs only once when opening the first .sln file. Closing the solution and re-opening without closing visual studio will not repeat this error.
4) Closing visual studio with the project open will also cause this to occur (File->Exit with the solution open).

I am running on a Windows 7 Home Premium x64.

I originally had the VS 2010 C# Express and VS 2010 Web Express with MVC 1/2/3 & Silverlight installed. Also had the VS 2010 SP1 installed. I uninstalled all of those except .NET Framework 4.0.

Subsequently I installed the VS 2010 Ultimate from MSDN on my PC and started experiencing this problem every time I tried to open or create a VS 2010 solution.

The workaround that SEEMS to have worked for me are the scripts from MS on 20/01/2010 at 10:57, only correction was one of the commands on the 3rd batch that was posted as 'query delete' instead of 'delete':
