Description

The Database Explorer Window won't open. I tried the following:

1) CTRL+ALT+S
2) View->Database Explorer (from the top menubar)
3) Tools->Connect to Database (from the top menubar)

None of them would bring up the database explorer window.

So, I went to Add/Remove Programs and Repaired Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition.
The problem still remained.
Then I uninstalled Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition completely and re-installed a fresh copy.

But the Database Explorer Window was still not accessible.
The application connects to the database without any problems...but I just can't see it. I can't manage tables etc.

I tried creating a new User profile in WinXP. When I login through the new user profile, the database explorer window is displayed without any problems.

I also tried getting Visual Studio Express 2008 SP1 settings from another computer for my Visual Studio Express 2008 SP1. Even after importing the settings from a different computer...the database explorer window still won't open.

This indicates (to me) that there is some setting related to my user profile which got messed up.

Can you provide an alternate or a fix ?

Thanks for your feedback. We're not able to repro this issue in our lab.
Could you please try following and see if it works?
    1. run command 'devenv /resetskippkgs /resetsettings' and see if your issue is fixed.
    2. if step 1 doesn't work for you, close Visual Studio, delete the "DefaultView.SEView", restart Visual Studio and see if it works. That file locates at %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\ServerExplorer

If you still have the issue, please reply with following info,
    1. OS version, like Win7,32-bits,ENG
    2. VS version, like Visual Studio 2008 SP1, VSTS, ENG
    3. VS settings, like 'Visual Basic Development Settings'

Thanks,
Daniel

Okay Daniel.

I don't think I followed you there on the First point. Did you mean I should Click Start->Goto Run-> Type "devenv /ResetSettings /ResetSettings" ? Because that did not work.

And I believe you missed it on point number 2, by directing me to go the ...VisualStudio\10.0...whereas I have written in the clearest font above, that I have Visual Studio Express 2008 SP1 (which I believe is Version 9).

So, please tell me if you can provide any workarounds as I am stuck.

Thanks for your feedback.

Could you try following,
1. run "devenv /ResetSettings /ResetSettings" from command line, and see if the Database Explorer Window can be open after that.
2. if it still doesn't work, check if the registry is similar as the one where it works, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\ServerExplorer

If you still can't open the window after that, please see if any other clues(error dialog, etc) that you can provider us.

Thank you,
Visual Studio Product Team
