Description

This issue was posted in another feedback post (#549880).

I am working on an ASP.NET MVC3 application. After debugging, I stop the app and switch to the .vbhtml page to edit it manually. I can't use the backspace key, enter key, etc. The only solution I have found is to close the project and re-open it.

If there's anything I can send to help reproduce this, please let me know.

I have just encountered this problem too and it started immediately after installing Web Essentials 2012.

Letter and number keys work but delete, backspace, pageup/down etc don't work. If I press NumLock then 9 and 3 work (the numbers on Page up/down).

I have just tried to uninstall another extension (BrowserStack), Visual Studio needs to re-start but I now get the message

‘Microsoft Visual Studio has detected that an operation is blocking user input. This is caused by an active modal dialog or a task that needs to block user interaction. Would you like to shut down anyway?’

But I am unable to shut down.

I killed VS2012 with task manager and re-started and now my keyboard works OK. So it looks like it was an issue with have BrowserStack and Web Essentials installed at the same time.

Thanks for your feedback. We haven't been able to reproduce the problem internally. If you discover a way to consistently reproduce the problem, please reactivate or create a new Connect bug with the relevant steps.

Thank you,

Thank you for your patience. We wanted to inquire whether the problem still occurs. Can you let us know if you have any extensions installed, and which?

We've tackled and fixed several of these issues in Visual Studio 2012 RTM.

Thanks you,

I see this issue in Razor views and when editing C# code as well.

You can see it occur to Scott Gu in his presentation which is recorded here http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/TechDays/Techdays-2012-the-Netherlands/2364 go to 28:00 in and you will see it happen. He is in a razor view of an MVC app... no web forms in sight.

However, I will install the QFE because I think I have seen this issue in web forms as well. We use both VB and C# in our solution.

Hi, Pilot,

We recently released a VS2010 sp1 QFE KB2650605 to solve a VB editor debugging problem. During VB web form debugging, VB web form may become un-editable if there are server tags inside. If you develop and debug VB web forms, you might be interested to download this QFE.

http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/Downloads/DownloadDetails.aspx?DownloadID=40811

I couldn't repro the problem with this QFE. If you can still repro, please do let me know with another set of detailed repro steps.

Sorry for not posting the information on this page earlier.

Thanks!

I'm sorry a fix in VS 11 just isn't going to help us. This should be a high priority issue... heck it happened to Scott Gu while he was demoing MVC 4 in the Netherlands. Please ensure this fix is back ported to VS 2010 and release it as a patch/hotfix. Please notify me when the patch is available.

We internally resolved this as a duplicate to another bug. Maybe the connect doesn't have this state and treated this bug as fixed.

BTW, this problem is indeed fixed in Visual Studio 11 Developer's preview.

How is this "resolved as fixed?"

Thanks for reporting all these bugs.

We've have a hard time to trace the problem. Even when we get the repro accidently, it's too late to track the real problem caused it. We're duping all the similar keyboard locking problems to a central bug, so that we can think a way to log the events if necessary.

We still couldn't find a reliable repro for all these problems yet. If you can help, please send the repro project, detailed repro step to me, xinqiu at microsoft dot com. Thank you very much.

Thanks again for the patience and we are appreciate your support.

I have found that when I get this problem it often clears up if I switch tabs and come back. If that fails I close the tab and reload the file.

Before I discovered this I was restarting VS. Bleh!
