My coworker and I cannot connect to the online extension gallery in visual studio. We both get a message that says "Cannot search for online extensions because an error occurred while trying to contact the server."

I used "devenv /log" and found this error in the log file (%APPDATA%\Roaming\Microsoft\VisualStudio\<version>\ActivityLog.xml):

Exception occurred when opening connection to ICategoryService2: The HTTP service located at is too busy. The remote server returned an error: (503) Server Unavailable

However, the service help page comes right up in my browser.

If I type something different in the search box, I get the following error instead:

"A connection to the server could not be established because the following error occurred: The server has returned invalid data. Please try again later."

I seem to have found the cause and a workaround.

Hello Mark Good. Our servers experience some heavy load in the days shortly following the BUILD conference which may have caused the issue you are experiencing. Can you confirm if you are still seeing this issue? If so can you provide a trace using a network acapture tool such as Fiddler that we can use to investigate the issue?
