When you open a solution programmatically from an add-in and it has no open documents, the EnvDTE.Project.CodeModel is returned null for the projects of the solution. This prevents getting, for example, the language of the projects of the solution using the CodeModel.Language property.

In VS 2010 you could do that even with no open documents, something has changed in VS 11 breaking backward compatibility and add-ins.
