When VS2012 is set in the dark theme and you open a WPF UserControl for edit, the entire background of the designer is pitch black.  There is no way to change the background color of the designer area, so by default any text is practically unreadable.

Yes, this is an unfortunately limitation in Visual Studio 2012 RTM. We would have loved to have the ability to change the default background color of the design surface, but could not get around to it (we have it on our backlog). A potential workaround (not sure if this will work for your scenarios or not) is to have a default brush in your application resources that is bound to each of the UserControl's background, and then you could change the color (and have a differnt color at runtime if you like, which could be transparent).
