Description

A nested rule that doesn't start with a "." is flagged as an invalid HTML tag.

The Twitter Bootstrap source code uses this pattern often, such as in labels-badges.less, which contains code like this:
.label,
.badge {
  // Important (red)
  &-important         { background-color: @errorText; }
  &-important[href]   { background-color: darken(@errorText, 10%); }
