So I use Visual Studio 2012 Premuim with Update 2, I'm having trouble adding more html controls to the html side of a webpart ascx control.  I did some research and found that there was a character limit of a little over 8256, if I go over this the ascx.g.cs file stops being generated and I can no longer compile my webpart.
There is several posts out there about the issue for VS 2010 & 2012
